Question:- The present age of a father is three years more than three times the age of his son. Three years hence, the father,s age will be 10 years more than twice the age of the son. Determine their present ages.            [CBSE  2020]

Answer:-  Let ‘x’ (in years) be the present age of the father and ‘y’ (in years) be the present age of the son.

Then, according to the question,

x = 3 y + 3    .    .    .  (i)

After 3 years,

Father’s age = x + 3

Son’s age = y + 3

So, according to the question,

x + 3 = 2(y + 3) + 10

⇒ x – 2y = 13   .   .   .  (ii)

Taking (i) equation

x = 3 y + 3

Substituting in equation (ii)

3y + 3 – 2y = 13

⇒ y = 13 – 3

⇒ y = 10

Substituting in equation (i)

x = 3(10) + 3

⇒ x = 33

Thus, thge father’s present age is 33 years and the son’s present age is 10 years.
