Question 4:
A train covers a distance of 480 km at a uniform speed. If the speed had been 8 km/h less, it would have taken 3 hours more to cover the same distance. Find the original speed of the train. [CBSE 2020]
Solution:
Let the original speed of the train = x km/h.
Time of journey of 480 km = hours
Time taken to cover a journey of 480 km with speed of (x – 8) km/h = hours
Now according to the question.
⇒ x(x – 40) + 32(x – 40) = 0$
⇒ (x – 40)(x + 32) = 0
⇒ x = 40, -32(Not possible)
Thus the original speed of train is = 40 km/h.
