Case Study:1

An electrician wanted to repair a street lamp at a height of 15 feet. He places his ladder such that its foot is 8 feet from the foot of the lamp post as shown in the figure below:

(A) Find the value of ‘cos R’.

(B) Find the value of ‘cosec P’.

Solution:

(A) In ΔPQR ∠Q = 90°

\cos R = \dfrac{\text{Side adjacent to angle R}}{\text{Hypotenuse}}

= \dfrac{QR}{PR}

We will first calculate PR by using pythagoras theorem in ΔPQR

So, PR^2 = PQ^2 + QR^2

= (15)^2 + (8)^2

= 225 + 64 = 289

\Rightarrow PR = 17 feet.

Therefore, \cos R = \dfrac{QR}{PR}= \dfrac{8}{17}

(B) Again from In ΔPQR

\cosec p = \dfrac{PR}{QR}

= \dfrac{17}{8}

Solution:

(A) Answer (d) \dfrac{65}{97}

Explanation:

\cos R = \dfrac{\text{Side adjacent to angle R}}{\text{Hypotenuse}} = \dfrac{QR}{PR}

In Right angle triangle PQR using Pythagoras theorem

PR^2 = PQ^2 + QR^2

\Rightarrow PR^2= (72)^2 + (65)^2

\Rightarrow PR^2= 94094

\Rightyarrow PR = 97 m

\therefore \cos R = \dfrac{QR}{PR} = \dfrac{65}{97}

(B) Answer (c) 72/65

Explanation:

From (A) PR = 97 m, PQ = 72 m, QR = 65 m

\cot P = \dfrac{\text{Base}}{\text{perpendicular}} = \dfrac{PQ}{QR}

\Rightarrow \cot P = \dfrac{72}{65}

(C) Answer (a) 1

Explanation: 

\sin^2 P + \cos^2 P = (\dfrac{65}{97})^2+\dfrac{72}{97}

= \dfrac{4225}{9409}+\dfrac{5184}{9409}

= \dfrac{4225+5184}{9409}

= \dfrac{9409}{9409} = 1

(D) Answer(c) 333/20

Explanation:

\sin R = \dfrac{72}{97}, \sin P = \dfrac{65}{97}, \tan P = \dfrac{65}{72}

\dfrac{6}{\sin R} + \dfrac{13}{\sin P}-12\tan P

= \dfrac{6}{72/97}+\dfrac{13}{65/97}-12\times \dfrac{65}{72}

=\dfrac{97}{12}+\dfrac{97}{5}- \dfrac{65}{6}

= \dfrac{485+1164-650}{60}

= \dfrac{999}{60}=\dfrac{333}{20}

Solution:

(A) Answer (c) 5/13

Explanation: We know,

\sin A =\dfrac{\text{Side opposite to angle A}}{\text{hypotenuse}}=\dfrac{BC}{AC}

In ΔABC Using Pythagoras theorem

AC^2 = AB^2 + BC^2

= (12)^2 + (5)^2

=144 + 25 = 169

\Rightarrow AC = 13 Units

\therefore \sin A = \dfrac{BC}{AC} = \dfrac{5}{13}

(B) We have,

\cos A =\dfrac{\text{Side adjacent to angle A}}{\text{hypotenuse}}=\dfrac{AB}{AC}

=\dfrac{12}{13}

(C) Answer (a) 12/13

Explanation:

\sin C =\dfrac{\text{Side opposite to angle C}}{\text{hypotenuse}}=\dfrac{AB}{AC}

= \dfraac{12}{13}

(D) \tan A - \cot C

=\dfrac{BC}{AB} - \dfrac{BC}{AB}

= \dfraac{5}{12}-\dfrac{5}{12}=0

(E) \operatorname{cosec} C = \dfrac{\text{Hypotenuse}}{\text{Side opposite to angle C}}

=\dfrac{AC}{AB}= \dfrac{13}{12}

\therefore \operatorname{cosec}^2 C = (\dfrac{13}{12})^2

=\dfrac{169}{144}
